To Abort or Not?
A spiritual meditation on abortion.

ear brothers and sisters of Christ,
As of recent there has been a controversial issue involving a couple who offered a lady over $2,000 a month to be a surrogate mother for the couple’s fourth child, as they could no longer bear children themselves. What ended up happening was that this child was beginning to develop some abnormalities in the mother’s womb, including heart complications. The doctors said the child had less than a 25 percent chance of living a normal life. The couple then offered the lady an extra 10 and even later 15 thousand dollars to terminate her pregnancy. The surrogate mother was asked to be Godlike, and to spare this child from suffering in the world, but she responded saying, “it is not your job to play God.” She ended up having the child and is currently raising this girl in her home. The child has a cleft palette, a deformed ear, some protuberance of the flesh on her neck, and heart complications.
I ask you brothers and sisters, did this lady make the right decision? Another issue that begs the question, was this God’s will? I want us to step back for a moment and observe this situation. There is a child who is to be born. But this is no ordinary child, this is a child who has many deficiencies and is already guaranteed not to live a “normal life.” The future issues are obvious. I ask you all to truly think about this because were about to hit a mind-blowing point here.
I want you to imagine the Good Lord who formed us Himself in our mothers’ wombs and created us in His image. Think about this part here. Even if He created us perfectly, the Good Lord Himself could have surely seen deficiencies within us. Could he not have foreseen that we ourselves would certainly fall into sin and become whatever you want call- abnormal, deficient, lacking. I mean I can go on and on, simply “Human!” Could He not have foreseen that we wouldn’t function exactly the way He intended us to? Of course He did. And that my brothers and sisters is the definition of true unconditional love.
I know it might sound cliché but let’s look at the facts here. How much different are we than this child? We talk about heart problems, the deformities, but what about this child’s spirit? This surrogate mother is a hero of our time, a true beacon and champion of the faith. She sees this child as a child of God not a child of men and women. She sees this child as a citizen of heaven, not of the earth. The Lord wills all things under heaven and earth, and if any of us in my opinion want to come out and say this child shouldn’t be born, that is your choice.
But I think this child is just another example of anyone of us. What if God said, “oh gee, this person is gonna have so many problems in life, I think I made a mistake.” That would really stink, wouldn’t it? Looks like you’re out of luck! But the Good Lord wants to teach us something about Him, that although He made us in His image, one of our deficiencies is that we judge on emotion on what we feel and what we see on the outside. But the Lord is always thinking about His Love for mankind, on how He can continually support Man in the things that they lacks so we can begin to understand this crazy thing we call “love.” Let me know what you think and if you feel withholding this child from the world so it can have peace in heaven is the true love, feel free to share.
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit–fruit that will last–and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you” (John 15:16).

I of course do not believe in aborting a baby. However I have an issue with the whole surrogacy thing. I know in the old times men would father children with different women to have many descendants , but I really wonder if surrogacy is what God wants for us. This case is a perfect example of issues which can happen , but I wonder how can a womam who has carried a child for 9 months with her blood running through that child be able to give up that child and not feel a hole in her heart ? Do we sometimes take steps to insist on our own wishes and desires over God’s Will ?
^Totally agree. This couple had three children already. They should have been thankful to God and raised them well. And honestly, for couples who can’t have kids, it is God’s will entirely, and they can try whatever they want, but if God doesn’t want them to have kids, they won’t… Besides, adoption is a much better option than this whole surrogacy mess. Coptic couples should consider adoption a bit more.
Oh absolutely, God has a reason for everything. Even the Great Einstein himself said God does not play with dice. So if couples can not bare children this no coincidence. The Lord is trying to lead in certain ways even through adoption.
Yes we do unfortunately, because we base our decision based on emotions not facts. We insist on our ways because we depend on our own understanding. We do not fully understand what God is trying to accomplish, nor His will, nor what He knows. It is our job only to submit so that we may only begin to imagine His true will and nature.
